DEAR — DoBal.J
A local’s guide to investing in Korea.
Hi, and welcome. I’m DoBal.J — and if you’ve ever stared at a Korean stock ticker wondering what on earth is going on behind those numbers, you’re exactly the person I built this site for.
Why this blog exists
Over the past few years, something shifted. People all over the world started paying attention to Korea — not just K-pop and Korean dramas, but Korean companies. Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai, the battery makers powering the world’s electric vehicles. More and more foreign investors began asking the same question: “How do I actually invest in this market?”
And here’s the thing — the answers out there are either buried in Korean, written by people who’ve never set foot in the country, or so technical that they forget you’re a real person trying to make a real decision. I wanted to fix that.
Korea Invest Guide is my attempt to be the friend who happens to live in Korea and happens to understand its stock market — the friend you’d text before buying your first Korean share.
Who is DoBal.J?
I’ll keep my real name to myself, but here’s what matters about who’s writing these posts:
I’ve lived in Korea my entire life. I don’t read about Korea from the outside — I live inside its economy, its news cycle, its quirks. When the government announces a new policy, I see how it actually plays out on the ground.
I studied Political Science & International Relations. This shapes how I read the market. Korean stocks are deeply tied to policy, regulation, and geopolitics — things like the Value-up Program, foreign ownership rules, and US-Korea relations. I’m trained to see those connections.
I also studied Business Administration. So when I look at an earnings report, a balance sheet, or a dividend policy, I know what I’m reading — and I can translate it into plain English for you.
That combination — a local who understands both the politics and the business of Korea — is the lens behind every article here.
Why I write anonymously
You’ll notice I go by a pen name. That’s intentional, and I think it’s important you understand why.
This blog is about sharing information and context — not pushing you toward specific stocks. Staying anonymous keeps me honest. I have no brand to protect, no clients to please, no reputation to leverage into selling you something. It’s just clear, local information, offered the way I’d offer it to a friend.
What you’ll find here
How-To Guides — opening accounts, taxes, currency, the practical mechanics of investing in Korea as a foreigner.
Stock & Sector Analysis — the big Korean names and the industries driving them, explained with local context.
ETF Guides — the simpler routes into Korea, including US-listed options.
Market Context — the policies, trends, and cultural factors that move Korean stocks but rarely make the English-language news.
One honest disclaimer
I’m sharing knowledge and perspective, not financial advice. I’m not your financial advisor, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Every investment carries risk, and the final decision — and responsibility — is always yours. Please do your own research and, when it matters, talk to a qualified professional.
That said — I’m genuinely glad you’re here. Pull up a chair, and let’s figure out the Korean market together.
